Recommended Growing Season

Onions generally perform best during cool to mild weather. The ideal sowing period may vary depending on your local climate and region.

Sowing Instructions

Sow the seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep in a seedling tray or nursery bed filled with loose, fertile and well-draining soil.

Cover the seeds lightly and water gently. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, but avoid waterlogging.

Once the seedlings become established and reach a suitable size, transplant them carefully into larger pots, grow bags or garden beds while maintaining adequate spacing.

Sunlight Requirements

Place the plants in a location receiving good sunlight, preferably around 5–6 hours or more each day.

Adequate sunlight supports healthy foliage and proper bulb development.

Watering & Care

Water regularly to keep the soil moderately moist, especially during the early growth stage. Avoid excessive watering or stagnant moisture around the roots.

Add well-decomposed compost or organic manure periodically. Keep the growing area free from weeds so the developing bulbs receive sufficient nutrients and space.

Reduce watering as the bulbs approach maturity and the foliage begins to yellow naturally.

Harvesting

Harvest mature onions when the tops start turning yellow and bending over. Carefully lift the bulbs from the soil and allow them to dry and cure in a well-ventilated shaded area before storage.

Young green onion leaves may also be harvested earlier when required.
