Sowing Instructions
Sow the seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep in a seedling tray or loose, well-draining potting mix. Cover lightly with soil and water gently with a spray. Seeds usually germinate in 5–10 days.
Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, but avoid waterlogging. Once the seedlings are 4–5 weeks old with 4–5 healthy leaves, transplant them carefully into larger pots, grow bags or garden beds.
Plant one seedling per 12–14 inch pot or grow bag, or space them about 45 cm apart in garden beds, to allow proper head development and airflow.
Sunlight Requirements
Place the plants in a location receiving approximately 5–6 hours of sunlight daily. Gentle morning sunlight is especially beneficial during warmer conditions.
Watering & Care
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as stress can cause small or loose heads.
Add well-decomposed compost or organic fertiliser every 3–4 weeks to support healthy leaves and head formation. When the white head is about the size of an egg, tie the outer leaves loosely over it to protect it from direct sun; this keeps the curd white and tender. Monitor regularly for caterpillars and aphids; neem oil spray helps as a preventive measure.
Harvesting
Heads are usually ready about 60–90 days after transplanting, depending on the weather. Harvest when the head is firm, compact and white, before it starts to loosen or turn yellowish. Cut the head with a clean knife, leaving a few leaves around it for protection.
