Sowing Instructions
Brinjal is best started in a seedling tray or small nursery pot and transplanted later. Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for about 4–6 hours before sowing.
Sow the seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep in a light, well-draining seedling mix. Water gently with a spray and keep the mix moist but not soggy. Seeds usually germinate in 7–14 days in warm conditions.
Transplant the seedlings when they are 4–5 weeks old and have 4–5 true leaves. Plant one seedling per 12–14 inch pot or grow bag, or space them about 45–60 cm apart in garden beds.
Sunlight Requirements
Brinjal grows best in full sunlight, ideally receiving around 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Good sunlight supports stronger plants, healthy flowering and better fruit development.
Watering & Care
Water regularly so the soil stays evenly moist, and allow excess water to drain completely. Avoid waterlogging.
Add well-decomposed compost or vermicompost every 3–4 weeks to support continuous fruiting. Support the plant with a stick as it grows heavy with fruit. Keep the area weed-free and check regularly for shoot and fruit borer and other common pests; neem oil spray helps as a preventive measure.
Harvesting
Fruits are usually ready to harvest about 60–70 days after transplanting. Pick them while the skin is glossy and firm; dull skin means the fruit is over-mature and seedy. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to keep producing.
Use clean scissors or a garden pruner to cut the fruit with a short piece of stem attached.
