Black Turmeric / Kali Haldi – Set of 2 Rhizomes

Grow the rare and fascinating Black Turmeric, also known as Kali Haldi (Curcuma caesia). Unlike common yellow turmeric, its rhizomes have a striking bluish-black to deep purple interior and a strong, camphor-like aroma, making it a prized collector's plant for home gardens.

The plant grows tall, attractive leaves, often with a dark purple stripe down the centre, and can produce lovely pink-tipped flower spikes. It grows well in pots, grow bags and garden beds.

Planting Instructions

Plant each rhizome about 5 cm deep with the buds (eyes) facing upward, in loose, fertile and well-draining soil mixed with compost. Use one rhizome per 12 inch pot or grow bag, or space them about 25–30 cm apart in beds.

Water lightly after planting and keep the soil just moist until shoots appear. Sprouting can take 3–6 weeks, especially before the warm season, so be patient.

Sunlight & Water

Black Turmeric prefers partial shade to bright light. Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth but never waterlogged, as the rhizomes can rot in soggy soil.

Plant Care & Harvesting

Add compost or vermicompost every 4–6 weeks and mulch the soil to keep it moist. The leaves naturally turn yellow and die back in winter, about 8–9 months after planting; this is the time to harvest the rhizomes, or leave them in the soil to sprout again next season.
