Planting Instructions

Plant the bulbs approximately 5 cm deep in loose, fertile and well-draining soil, with the pointed end facing upward. Space them about 5–8 cm apart. A 6–8 inch pot can hold all 5 bulbs.

Water thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist. Shoots usually appear in 2–4 weeks. Use containers with proper drainage holes and avoid waterlogging, as wet soil can rot the bulbs.

Light and Water Requirements

Freesia grows best in full sun to bright light, ideally 5–6 hours of sunlight daily. It prefers cool weather; in warmer regions, gentle morning sun with some afternoon shade works well.

Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Keep the soil moderately moist during active growth and flowering, but avoid overwatering.

Plant Care

Add well-decomposed compost or a balanced flowering-plant fertiliser once the leaves are established, and again when flower buds appear. The slender stems may need light support with thin sticks or a small ring.

Flowering usually begins 10–14 weeks after planting. Remove faded flowers to keep the plant neat. After flowering, let the leaves remain until they turn yellow naturally. Then lift the bulbs, dry them in shade and store them in a cool, dry place for the next season.
